Magaly Solier, born on June 11, 1986, in Huanta, Ayacucho, Peru, is a Peruvian actress, singer, and activist. Known for her exceptional talent in film, she has made a name for herself internationally with her powerful performances in films that highlight the social and cultural realities of Peru. In addition to her acting career, Magaly is also an accomplished singer, using her voice to promote Andean culture.
Growing up in the Andean mountains, Magaly Solier was raised in a region marked by social and political conflicts. This experience deeply influenced her commitment and artistic career. She was discovered while participating in a singing contest in her hometown, which led to her first major role in the film Madeinusa (2006), directed by Claudia Llosa.
Her performance in Madeinusa, where she portrays a young girl living in an isolated Andean village, was praised by critics, and the film won numerous international awards. This role marked the beginning of a prolific film career.
In 2009, Magaly Solier cemented her international reputation with the film The Milk of Sorrow (La Teta Asustada), also directed by Claudia Llosa. In this film, she plays Fausta, a young woman traumatized by the Peruvian civil war. Her moving performance captured the attention of audiences and critics worldwide.
The Milk of Sorrow won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2009 and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, propelling Magaly Solier onto the international stage. She received praise for her ability to convey deep emotions through a subtle and nuanced performance.
Alongside her acting career, Magaly Solier is also a talented singer. She primarily sings in Quechua, the native language of her region, and uses her music to promote Andean culture and raise awareness about the preservation of indigenous traditions. Her debut album, Warmi (Woman), is a tribute to Andean women and their resilience in the face of daily challenges.
Magaly is also an activist dedicated to the rights of women and indigenous peoples. Through her films, songs, and public appearances, she fights against cultural stereotypes and advocates for better representation of indigenous cultures in Peruvian and international media.
In addition to Madeinusa and The Milk of Sorrow, Magaly Solier has starred in several other acclaimed films, such as Amador (2010) by Spanish director Fernando León de Aranoa, where she plays a young Peruvian immigrant in Spain. She has also worked in Peruvian and international productions, solidifying her status as a world-renowned actress.
Her commitment to Peruvian cinema and her connection to her cultural roots are evident in her choice of films, which often address important social issues such as women's rights, poverty, and the fight for social justice.
Magaly Solier is now an iconic figure in Peruvian culture. Through her acting talent and unique voice, she has elevated the stories of Peruvian indigenous communities to the international stage. Her artistic work and dedication to social justice have made her an inspiration to many people in Peru and around the world.
With a constantly evolving career, Magaly Solier continues to make her mark on the film industry and promote Andean traditions through her films and music. She embodies the resilience and creativity of indigenous peoples, while paving the way for better representation of these communities in contemporary art.
